Puri District Police had started functioning on 01.04.1936 having its headquarters at Puri. Sri J.D.Sahay was the first Superintendent of Police with its origin in a small security force. Puri District Police initially had enjoyed its governance on the whole jurisdiction of undivided of Puri Revenue District. After Re-Organization of districts the then Bhubaneswar, Khurdha&Nayagarh Sub-Division had been upgraded to districts in the year 1993. This district retained its jurisdiction with two sub-divisions and four circles. Subsequently the entire district was divided in four sub-divisions i.ePipili, Nimapada, Sadar& Town for better convenience of administration and to make the police administration more people friendly. This police district is having a population of 1698730. Out of this, the population of SC & ST is 19.1 % & 0.4 % respectively. It is headed by the Superintendent of Police with a total strength of more than 1218 personnel.
